TIPS FOR TRANSPORTING FOOD & KEEPING IT AT THE DESIRED TEMPERATURE:
Enameled cast iron, earthenware and stoneware retain heat better than glass baking/serving dishes. If you happen to have a piece of cook/serveware made of the aforementioned materials, place it in the warmer for twenty minutes or so, transfer your food to it and wrap with aluminum foil before traveling.
Wrap your casserole dish in a beach towel and place it in a cardboard box. This will keep your dish both warm and insulated, but also protects your vehicle from any potential spills.
WS suggests chaffing dishes and crockpots to help keep your food warm. While the methods are genius, I'd suggest checking with your host before plopping bulky items in the middle of their spread.
Try using an insulated cooler (like a Yeti or Igloo) to keep things warm. Coolers works both ways and will do a pretty decent job at keeping things warm, as well as cold. They also suggested using an insulated thermos for smaller items, such as a dip. Bingo.
If traveling with cold food items, consider making a quick ice pack by filling a zip-top storage bag with crushed ice and packing it in a cooler. I might just add to that and say to be sure to place the storage bag beneath, rather than on top, of your serving vessel. This will prohibit any potential leaking into your dish.
